HYDRANGEA BLOSSOMS
February 4th and 18th on Zoom
$25 for the two classes together
I’m hoping some beautiful flowers can perk up the drab colors of February and thought hydrangeas might do the trick! Hydrangeas have lovely flowers in a variety of types, shapes, and colors. I love them--whether viewed from a distance in their bold, dramatic forms or viewed close-up for their delicate, intricate petals and sepals. I’ve had some requests to demonstrate how I like to paint this favorite flower. While they may look complicated, painting hydrangeas is not difficult using a few simple techniques. I’ll demonstrate using watercolor paints, watercolor pencils, and also briefly discuss the possibility of artists inks on both paper and an option of small canvas if you prefer.
Hydrangea
Watercolor Paint: Cobalt, Winsor Blue Red Shade, Cobalt Violet, Quinacridone Pink, Quinacridone Red, Aureolin, Sap Green, Phthalo Green, Sepia
Watercolor Pencil: Light Ultramarine, Ultramarine, Derwent Watercolor Sky, Prismacolor Watercolor Lilac, Middle Purple Pink, Fuchsia, Light Yellow Glaze, Light Green, Earth Green Yellow, Permanent Green Olive, Cream.
I will demonstrate using Hot Press Watercolor Paper and will add an option using a 6”x6” mini cotton canvas. In the canvas demonstration I prepped the canvas with gesso. The brand I used was Liquitex, but there are many brands.
Additionally, I will demonstrate an option of adding a few liquid inks on the canvas hydrangea. I will use Dr. Ph Martin’s Bombay Yellow Ochre and Indigo FW Acrylic Artist Ink. You may additionally choose to use white ink. No ink is necessary. I will just discuss why you might add this media on canvas if you choose.

BRYCE CANYON, AN APPRECIATION
March 11th and 25th on Zoom
$25 for the two classes together
As some of you know, this past summer Mark and I explored the breathtaking Bryce Canyon National Park. Rather than a super photo-realistic painting, I wanted to paint something that captured my reaction to this special place. Using color, shape, and sense of atmosphere I hope to convey my overall impression of the beautiful, delicate canyon. I will use a series of diluted washes to build up subtle colors and form. I will also show how you might use a graphite pencil, watercolor pencils, and/or dry-brushed watercolor paint to indicate fine detail and texture in areas I choose.
